A few simple habits will keep your home safe and help your candles burn beautifully every time.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. This is the single most important candle safety rule. Always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
Place candles where curious hands and paws can't reach them. A knocked-over candle is a serious fire hazard.
Hot wax is liquid and can spill. Always extinguish your candle fully and allow it to cool before moving it.
Always place candles on a sturdy, level, heat-resistant surface away from flammable objects like curtains, paper, and fabrics.
A long wick causes excessive flame height, soot, and uneven burning. Trim to about ¼ inch before lighting each time for the best burn and longest life.
Use a candle snuffer, or carefully blow out the flame and quickly place the lid on the jar to extinguish any remaining ember on the wick. Avoid blowing hard, which can splatter hot wax.
On the first burn, let your candle burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges of the jar. This prevents "tunneling" and ensures an even burn for the life of the candle.
Drafts cause uneven burning, excessive dripping, and soot. Keep candles away from open windows, fans, and air vents.
Once the wax level gets to ½ inch from the bottom, it's time to retire the candle. Burning lower than this can cause the jar to overheat.
